We’re on a mission to fast-track New Zealand’s transition to becoming 100% renewable
Our story
solarZero began in the 70s as the brainchild of Professor Arthur Williamson and his University of Canterbury colleagues as Thermocell, a solar water heating company. Andy Booth, our founder, evolved the original solar hot water business as he could see that decarbonising power was going to be one of the key environmental changes that we could make to combat climate change. With a focus on driving the transition to renewable energy, our business continued to grow and innovate to ensure that we were making renewable energy affordable for every kiwi. This drove the introduction of our solar subscription, the first of its kind in Aotearoa.
Fast forward over 50 years, and we’re now Aotearoa’s leading solar energy company, installing more solar systems than any other company in the country. And we won’t stop there.
Our mission is to create a cleaner, brighter future by making solar accessible and lowering its cost for people here in Aotearoa. Because we believe transitioning to a renewable future is possible together, but it demands the best technology and innovative thinking.
It’s an ambitious goal and one we’re deeply committed to. Now’s your chance to join us.

Our commitment to sustainability
Our goal is to power New Zealand on 100% renewable energy and lower our environmental impact while we’re at it. To get there, we’re dedicated to constantly researching and developing ways to make it as easy as possible to transition to solar. Here’s how:
We’re a Toitu climate-positive business
This means we measure and report all emissions each year to globally recognised standards. We have set science-based targets as the basis of our decarbonisation strategy to achieve our reduction targets and offset 125% of remaining emissions via verified carbon credits.
Working towards the Sustainable Development Goals
Our sustainability strategy sets out 18 targets to help us create a positive impact across the key areas of environment, social and governance.. These include ambitious targets and actions on greenhouse gas emissions, packaging and waste, staff wellbeing, diversity, equity and inclusion, education, leadership and supply chain transparency.
